A long absence creates uncertainty, and uncertainty can create either risk or value. The length of the layoff alone does not tell you which one you are looking at.
Public works are only part of the preparation
Some trainers build fitness through a visible series of workouts. Others do more preparation privately and use the published work as a final tune-up. That is why the trainer’s established first-off-layoff pattern matters.
Compare the current work tab with the way this horse prepared before previous good races. A horse that has run well fresh before deserves different treatment from one that regularly needs a start.
Price the uncertainty
- Does the work pattern look deliberate and uninterrupted?
- Has the trainer succeeded in similar return situations over a meaningful sample?
- Is the horse entered at a realistic class, surface, and distance?
- Is the price high enough to accept what you cannot know?
